Shocking footage has emerged of a grown man slamming into a five-year-old boy, knocking him unconscious, as he bolted through a busy Sydney shopping centre.

The footage shows the large 30-year-old man running full pelt through Lidcombe Shopping Centre in Sydney’s west just after 2.40pm on Sunday.

Police say the man was fleeing from a group of shoppers who were trying to conduct a citizen’s arrest on him after he allegedly stole a mobile phone from a shop.

The innocent five-year-old can be seen in a white shirt walking behind a woman, thought to be his mum, approaching a T-intersection around the corner of a store.

First the mother walks around the corner, but just as her son follows the 30-year-old man comes flying down the path from the other direction and smashes into him at top speed.

Disturbing footage shows the little boy’s head slammed into the hard floor.

His mother can be seen spinning around to grab his limp body and drag him from danger, into the arms of a nearby shopper who  immediately stopped to help.

NSW Police said the boy was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital with minor head injuries.

He is reported to be in a stable condition as of Monday morning.

Police said the 30-year-old man had attempted to buy a phone inside the centre, but fled the store with the device when the transaction was declined.
