Two men have been fined more than $2,300 for refusing to wear face masks at an airport.

A 49-year-old from Melbourne was slapped with a $1,548 fine on Saturday for entering the terminal at Hobart Airport twice without a face mask.

Tasmanian police said officers and biosecurity workers asked the man to wear a mask before he was hit with the infringement notice.

A 25-year-old from New South Wales refused to wear a mask at the airport on Monday.

The man claimed he had an exemption on medical grounds.

When he was unable to provide a written exemption, he was fined $774.

All passengers arriving or departing Tasmania are required to wear a face mask inside terminal buildings and carparks within the airport precinct.

‘The direction to wear face masks was made to protect travellers and the community from the risk of transmission of COVID-19,’ Inspector Brian Edmonds said.

‘Tasmania Police urge all travellers to comply with the direction in the interest of public safety.’
