Fears for Wayne Lineker’s European clubs after UK bar business collapsed

Wayne Lineker’s UK bar business has collapsed with a £100,000 debt while the playboy’s £30million European nightclub empire remains shut due to coronavirus with a Dubai opening delayed and a £8million-plus lawsuit hanging over his head.

Gary Lineker’s younger brother, who is currently appearing on the reality television show Celebs Go Dating, has appointed a liquidator to close down the British company run with his son Duane.

Duane International Ltd owes employees £9,530 in unpaid wages, with around £90,000 owing to a business partner and a bank.

The revelation caps a miserable time for Wayne, who left the Spanish party island of Ibiza last September after his six European clubs were ‘battered’ because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Just two days ago he admitted to being ‘nervous’ as he tries to work out when he can start opening bookings for his shuttered venue, O Beach, in San Antonio.

Wayne also has nightspots in Marbella, Tenerife, Alcudia in Mallorca, Zante and Paphos that will have been crippled by a lack of tourists, especially celebs and holidaymakers from Britain. He has also been forced to postpone the opening of his new venue O Beach Dubai until later this year.

MailOnline has asked Mr Lineker for a comment about the future of his bars in Spain and Greece.

But in a cryptic Instagram post about his businesses this week he said: ‘A lot of things happening right now. For sure I am nervous but as always I do remain positive. Interested to hear your thoughts. just reaching out for hopefully positive feedback and hope. We plan to go live this month with bookings’.

It came as former professional footballer left paralysed in a swimming pool fall at an Ibiza nightclub owned by Wayne has been given the go-ahead to bring an £8.5 million damages claim in the English courts.

Jonathan Hutchinson was found floating in the pool by fellow revellers at the O Beach Ibiza in San Antonio in 2016.

With a portfolio of bars and venues believed to be worth £30 million across Europe — Wayne is to the club scene what his brother is to the world of football.

But last year he hinted that he may be looking to build a new life.

He said in September: ‘My party days are done now. I’m ready to settle down . . . hopefully, with the one I’ll be with for the rest of my life. I’d like a girl to be funny and have some form of intelligence so they can hold a conversation.

‘I can’t stand it when girls don’t know where cities are in their own country. I don’t get it. It’s like they never leave their hometown.

‘I’m not pretending to be the most intelligent guy in the world, because I’m definitely not, but it does baffle me when they don’t even know where certain cities are in the British Isles.’

Wayne has been in the UK since the Autumn.

In an an Instagram post last year Wayne wrote: ‘Adios Ibiza. Until next year.

‘For the first time in 9 years of obeachibiza history I won’t be at the closing party..I have left Ibiza today beaten and battered.. literally couldn’t take anymore’.

Wayne and his son Duane are directors of Linekers (UK) Ltd, which changed its name to Duane International Ltd last August. Official paperwork describes the company as ‘licensed clubs, public houses and bars’.

Wayne has several bar businesses in Britain, including in Essex and previously in Blackpool. Liquidators confirmed the company was £99,120 in the red and had no assets to cover the debts.

The revelation caps a miserable time for Wayne, who left the Spanish party island of Ibiza last September after his nightclubs were closed because of the pandemic.

He suffered an outbreak of Covid-19 at his beloved Lineker’s bar. He closed all venues in the Lineker’s Group for the remainder of 2020, shuttering bars and clubs in Spain, Tenerife and in Greece.

Last year twice-divorced Wayne, who has been single for two years since separating from his 27-year-old model girlfriend Danielle Sandhu, was branded a ‘creep’ and ‘an embarrassment’ over claims he only dates women under 30.

There was outrage when he posted an astonishing list of criteria for potential girlfriends, with the hashtag #wifeywhereyouat.

As well as his prospective lover having to be a ‘worldie’ and considerably younger than him, the wishlist included being ‘prepared to give up your career or job’, ‘able to cook’, and, bizarrely, to know where the city of Lincoln is.

Wayne insisted that any girlfriends should have a driving license to share his Bentley and a future ‘Lamborghini Jeep’ purchase.

He also refused to consider any women who have shared teeth whitening posts, appear on OnlyFans, or dating websites, and who are ‘boring’ or bad at geography.

Wayne, the silver-haired Peter Pan of the Mediterranean’s fleshpots who has had two marriages, four children with three different women, a broken engagement and about as many flings as his brother has caps for England, finally wants to settle down.

‘When I’m single, I’m a bit of a loose cannon,’ he said last year. ‘I go out, I party and I get silly.’

Born 18 months after his brother Gary into a solid family of market traders, both boys were as thick as thieves and had trials with the local football team, Leicester City.

‘I had more skill than Gary but he had the dedication, commitment and determination,’ he said. ‘I never had any of those things — just skill and a wish to go out with my mates’.

Wayne packed in school, too, to work on the fruit and veg market stall with his father Barry. Within a year, he had his own business and was employing 40 people at 16.

He then decided to set up his first bar in Tenerife in 1986, the same year Gary won the Golden Boot at the World Cup. At the time, Wayne was married to his first wife Debbie and had already had two sons, Duane and Sean.

‘I married young at 21,’ he said. ‘Supermarkets were ending the market game so I thought: “What can I do?” Debbie’s parents lived in Tenerife so I thought: “I’ll open a bar and I’ll call it Linekers”.

He said: ‘That was the best thing I ever did.’

His first marriage lasted 12 years and when it ended he was awarded custody of his sons. He has not said why the marriage broke down but he moved to England for the boys’ education until they left school.

Father-of-four Wayne has been married once and has had several girlfriends, but is thought to have been single since his 2018 split from ex-fiancée Danielle Sandhu (pictured together)

He takes all his children to the Maldives every year, says they are a ‘super-close family’ and remains on good terms with his previous girlfriends and wives, the second of whom, Sasha, is mother to his youngest son Freddie.

He has been upset by his split with model Danielle Sandhu.

He said last year: ‘Danielle and I still WhatsApp each other every single day. I was very sad [when we separated]. She’ll be very difficult to replace. It was a mutual decision but a very tough one.

‘I like to travel and see different cultures. It’s nice to be able to share that with someone, isn’t it? I’m not really one for going away with my mates.

‘It’s not really my thing, although I go away with my friend Calum Best [George Best’s celebrity son] once a year. We normally go to Dubai.

‘I love to eat amazing food, that’s my life hobby, so we [visit] all the nice restaurants, have drinks after dinner. Do a few Instagrams and go and do the same thing.

‘I’m not super rich but I’m comfortable. I can afford to travel and like to travel business class. But Danielle was a very, very successful model who began working more and more. We hardly saw each other.

‘She couldn’t come to Ibiza which put a huge strain on our relationship and in my environment, she was wondering what I was up to. I wasn’t up to anything but, from her point of view, it was difficult we couldn’t spend summers together.’ He shakes his head.

‘I said to Danielle, ‘Obviously, if you’d had a career where you could have worked from a laptop, we wouldn’t be in this position, would we?’

‘But what is being heartbroken? I cry all the time. I cried at Finding Nemo. I cry at all the Disney movies — all romantic movies.

‘I’ve been sad but never to the point where I can’t cope with life. . . I just move on, console myself with some company and my family and I’m OK. You go on Instagram, have a look round and get busy.’
