The Army soldier husband of a high-profile TV anchor will fight a rape charge a Sydney court has heard – as his heavily pregnant wife delivered the morning news.

Mark Anthony Cameron, Nine newsreader Davina Smith’s husband of ten years, will stand trial after being charged with sexually assaulting another woman two-and-a-half years ago.

Prosecutors allege that Cameron raped the woman in Sutherland – not far from the family home in Cronulla – in the early hours of December 2, 2018.

But Cameron will plead not guilty to the single charge of sexual intercourse without consent, the Downing Centre Local Court heard on Thursday.

The court heard that Cameron has also been hit with a restraining order on behalf of the alleged victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

A stony-faced Cameron stood for several minutes in front of a magistrate as he learned he will formally enter a not guilty plea in front of a judge next month.

About the same time this morning, Ms Smith – his wife and mother of their four-year-old daughter – delivered the morning news update from Channel Nine’s headquarters in the city’s north, updating the country on the nation’s troubled vaccine rollout and chaos in the Gaza strip.

Cameron was arrested in November but the fact he had been charged wasn’t publicly known until it was revealed by a local news outlet in March.

Sutherland Local Court has previously heard that prosecutors will allege the alleged sexual assault occurred against an ‘intoxicated victim’.

According to the St George Shire Leader, police have alleged in court documents that the ‘prosecution case in this matter is extremely strong.’

Prosecutors claim the accused has ‘made admissions to the offence which were captured under the authorised warrant’.

That will likely be a matter for a jury to determine should the case proceed to trial as expected.

Cameron could be seen scrolling through a phone in the court lobby on Thursday – a photo of his family as his screen saver – as he awaited for the brief mention.

Cameron was escorted to court by three suited men and his lawyer and remains free on bail.

Last year, Ms Smith wrote in a social media post how she and her daughter were separated from Cameron due to coronavirus border closures.

He was based in Queensland with the army. His exact role while facing the charges is unclear with the Defence Department declining to comment.

‘We’re no strangers to distance and separation but this is unlike any deployment or work trip we’ve faced,’ Ms Smith wrote.

‘Normal life as a military family is tough, life as an MWDU – member with dependent unaccompanied – is tougher.’

Cameron is also understood to have previously been deployed to Afghanistan. He is expected to receive a trial date in June.
