Georgia woman, 43, is arrested for burying her mother’s body in the backyard

A Georgia woman has been arrested and charged with concealing a body after she allegedly burying her mom’s corpse in their backyard.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a home on Tobacco Road in South Augusta around 4:25 p.m. on June 3 for a medical call, WFXG reported.

Deputies who responded found Melissa Lockhart, 43, inside the home with a broken right knee and she was taken to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment.

While at the home, deputies also spotted a shallow grave in the backyard that had been recently dug and found the remains of Lockhart’s 67-year-old mother Miriam Lynn Lockhart.

Melissa Lockhart allegedly told cops she found her mom dead in bed on either May 31 or June 1 and did not want anyone to take her mom from her or ‘to cut’ on her by performing an autopsy, so she buried her in the backyard, WFXG reported.

She has been charge with concealing death and a probation violation and her bond has been set at $6,520.50, court records show.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has completed an autopsy for Miriam Lynn Lockhart, though the results of that autopsy are not known.

A GBI spokesperson declined to disclose the autopsy results or comment on the case to Oxygen on Tuesday.

The outlet obtained records that show officials had previously been sent to the home Melissa Lockhart lived in with her mother.

Deputies had responded to the home in February and found Miriam Lockhart having trouble breathing, according to Oxygen.

In a separate police report obtained by the outlet, Miriam Lockhart allegedly told deputies she was ‘scared’ her daughter may ‘hit or kill her’ and said she was immobile and hadn’t left her house in years.

Law enforcement officials never found evidence or visible injuries but referred the case to the state’s Adult Protective Services, the outlet reported. Melissa Lockhart reportedly denied abusing her mom.

Miriam Lockhart, who had worked as a real estate agent, was remembered as having a ‘good personality’ by friends and colleagues.

Jeff Keller, a former employer of Lockhart, told WRDW that she was a ‘good agent.’

‘If you don’t have that personality, the ability to like people and you’ve got change your personality to match theirs they’re not going to like you and they’re not going to trust you. Which means you’ve got to have those two traits to be successful in real estate,’ he said.

He added: ‘She worked for me for about two or three years, and she was a good agent. A good personality.’
