A mother has been slammed after forcing her son to run in the 104-degree heat as punishment for acting out in school and posting video about it on TikTok.
Katarina Rodriguez told followers that the punishment was an alternative form of discipline to spanking – but critics called the clip ‘sick’ and ‘traumatizing.’
Rodriguez posted footage of herself running down a sidewalk alongside her son, who appears to be panting and out of breath. It is unclear exactly where the footage was taken.
She told the camera: ‘My five-year-old doesn’t want to listen in school.
‘He makes destructive noises, doesn’t listen, thinks that he doesn’t need to settle down when he comes from the playground.
‘And we’re gonna run. We’re gonna run in 104 degrees.’
The video captured Rodriguez and her son running on the sidewalk as she explained his punishment was for acting out in school. Her son is seen panting and out of breath
Rodriguez continues: ‘This is the first time we’re gonna run for his sad faces in school.
‘He thought we were just gonna run to he mailbox. So he took off running. Sprinting. Now he’s dying. We gonna behave in school?’
Her son whimpers in response to the question while he continues running.
The end of the video shifts back to Rodriguez in her home as she explains her style of discipline.
‘We’re not gonna hit. We’re not gonna spank. We’re gonna discipline. We’ll see what tomorrow brings,’ she said.
The mom said: ‘We’re not gonna hit. We’re not gonna spank. We’re gonna discipline. We’ll see what tomorrow brings’
Rodriguez later posted a follow up video to address the criticism, and insisted her son improved his behavior as a result of the punishment
But TikTok users condemned Rodriguez’s punishment.
‘God this is traumatizing. Punishment for not being able to listen in a classroom. There’s obviously something else going on with them,’ one wrote according to The Daily Dot.
‘That’s one way to ruin a healthy relationship with exercise,’ another said
Rodriguez later posted a follow up video to address the criticism, and insisted her son improved his behavior as a result of the punishment.
She said: ‘I made my kid run because he hates running as a source of punishment, and if you don’t like that because you think that it’s wrong, then that’s your opinion.
‘If I can scare him with the fact that we’re going to run if you do not have a good day and be respectful and nice and kind, so be it.’
She added: ‘It beats my hand stinging from whooping his ass.’
Rodriguez took down both the punishment and apology video on her TikTok account
Rodriguez also defended her style of discipline claiming that she is trying to make her son ‘a man.’
‘Not that it’s anyone’s business, we’ve tried other disciplinary actions of grounding, taking away things, corners, whatever, and if those things work for your kids, great. Didn’t work for mine,’ she added.
The video of Rodriguez’s punishment and her follow-up video have since been taken down from her account.
