Britain’s daily Covid cases today fell by a quarter in a week, official figures showed — but deaths jumped more than a third.

Department of Health statistics showed 30,825 cases have been spotted within the last 24 hours, more than 10,000 fewer infections than last Monday.

The country has recently been hit by a heatwave with temperatures soaring as high as 30C last week, meaning people could spend more time outdoors. More warm weather is forecast for the coming week.

Schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have been back for less than a fortnight. England is yet to see the spike in infections that Scotland recorded.

Another 61 Covid deaths were also recorded today, which was up 35.6 per cent from the same time last week when 45 were recorded. Covid fatalities lag behind cases by about three weeks.

Professor Chris Whitty and the chief medical officers from the devolved nations today said children should be offered one dose of the Covid vaccine through the schools vaccination programme.

But parents, ministers and teaching unions have warned of conflict in schools over the jabbing drive. Ministers have suggested 12 to 15-year-olds will be able to overrule their parents to get the jabs.
