Taxpayers paid extra $1.7 million to protect Trump children, officials after he left office

Former President Trump’s unusual order extending secret service protection for his four adult children and three top administration officials for six extra months cost taxpayers an additional $1.7 million, according to a report.

Secret Service agents typically protect presidents and their spouses for life, and their children until the age of 16. But Trump’s order gave protection to his adult children – Donald Trump Jr., 43; Ivanka, 39; Eric, 37; Tiffany, 27; and their spouses, as well as his Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, his chief of staff Mark Meadows and his national security adviser Robert O’Brien.

In recent year, former presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and George W. Bush have signed orders adding additional protection for their college-age children for a short time after leaving office.

But the Trump team’s $1.7 million included funding trips for agents to ski vacations, weekend houses, a resort in Cabo San Lucas, according to a Washington Post analysis. Still, the seemingly large tab was only a small fraction of the Secret Service’s $2.4 billion budget.

One trip to the Middle East where Mnuchin scouted investment opportunities for his business cost the public dole $52,000.

Taxpayers paid up to $3,000 each for agents’ plane tickets and $11,000 for rooms at the Qatar’s luxe St. Regis Doha to guard the multimillionaire former investment banker and Hollywood producer.

Mnuchin was by far the most expensive to protect – running up a $479,000 bill over six months. Devin O’Malley, spokesperson for Mnuchin, said that he had not asked Trump to provide the additional protection.

He didn’t turn it down, either.

O’Malley told the Post that Mnuchin ‘intends to reimburse certain expenses,’ without delving into details.

Records show agents followed Mnuchin on three separate leisure trips to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico and three business trips to the Middle East.

On Jan. 20, agents traveled with Ivanka and her family from Washington to Bedminster, N.J. where she has a cottage on the grounds of Trump’s golf club. The club charged Secret Service $708.30 for one night, or $141.66 per room, the rate they charged the service while Trump was still president.

In the six months that followed, Ivanka and Jared Kushner racked up a $347,000 taxpayer tab for airfare, hotels and rental cars as they jetted off to Hawaii, ski country in Utah, a swanky Wyoming ranch and Kiawah Island, S.C.

The cost of protecting Eric Trump and Donald Jr. was more modest: $241,000 over six months for Eric and $213,000 for Trump Jr. The brothers mostly shuttled between their homes in New York and south Florida.

Trump Jr. took a trip fishing in Montana. Eric stayed at Trump hotels in Washington and Chicago, where the former president’s properties charged $350 and $1,415 for rooms in each location respectively.

Chief of staff Meadows accounted for $342,000 in protection costs, with visits to Washington, Florida and North Carolina, his home state.

Tiffany Trump was the least expensive to protect. Partial records show that as of May, three months after Trump left office, Secret Service had spent $56,000 on airfare, rental cars and hotels while protecting her.

The Post found little data on the cost of protecting O’Brien, other than a $17,000 tab on rental cars for the Secret Service.
