  • ABC presenter Tony Armstrong was detailing Paine’s neck surgery live on air
  • He accidentally said ‘bulging d**k’ when referring to Paine’s ‘bulging disc’
  • Paine stepped down from the Australian captaincy over sexting scandal

A slip of the tongue from a recent television news report about Tim Paine is getting a second life online after the Test cricket captain resigned over a sexting scandal.

ABC News Breakfast sports presenter Tony Armstrong left his co-hosts in stitches in September when he mangled his words while reporting on Paine’s neck surgery.

Armstrong was detailing Paine’s bulging disc injury to his fellow panellists when he stumbled on the word ‘disc’.

‘Paine has a bulging d**k that has been … disc that has been – that’s a funny one – that has been causing him pain,’ he said as he tried to correct himself.

‘Disc … I said disc,’ Armstrong continued before bursting into laughter himself.

The gaffe quickly did rounds on social media at the time, but began circulating again on Friday again as the raunchy details of Paine’s sexting scandal were laid bare.

‘Tony Armstrong with the exclusive on Tim Paine months ago,’ joked Dean Messiter on Twitter.

Paine sensationally stood down as captain on Friday after admitting to sending a stream of explicit text messages to a female staffer in November 2017.

The married father-of-two young children was investigated by Cricket Australia in 2018 after the woman complained, but cleared of misconduct and the matter kept secret.

Paine, 36, sent a photo of his penis to a female co-worker along with a stream of lewd text messages, many of which are too raunchy to publish.

Paine, who has led the team since the Sandpapergate scandal in 2018, held a press conference at 2.30pm on Friday where he tearfully apologised and announced he would step down.

‘Will you want to taste my d**?? F**k me, I’m seriously hard,’ one of the messages sent to the Cricket Tasmania employee read.

The lewd messages were sent on November 22 and 23, 2017, the eve and morning of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Cricket Australia was not aware of the messages until after Paine was appointed Test captain in March 2018 in the wake of the ball tampering scandal.

When handing over the report to his co-hosts they immediately erupted into laughter and questioned which part of the cricketer was bulging

Social media was flooded with light-hearted messages joking that Armstrong’s slip of the tongue was ‘proof’ he knew about the scandal before it broke.

‘Kudos to Tony Armstrong for revealing the inside goss on Tim Paine some weeks ago,’ wrote one person.

‘Never let it go unsaid that Tony Armstrong isn’t first with the sports news,’ added a third.

Armstrong retweeted one replay of the blunder at the time with the caption ‘Lol’.

‘A proper laugh made for a great start to the day. Awesome work, Mr. Armstrong and Team,’ one commented.

‘The acknowledgement once you said it was priceless brother,’ said another.

Paine underwent surgery over the injury but will now miss the upcoming Ashes against England.

The Ashes are slated to start on December 8.
