‘Peacemaker’ died during mass brawl outside Manchester bar’: Passer-by, 60, who ‘tried to break up fight’ was killed in melee – as man, 21, arrested over murder remains in custody

A man who died after being attacked during a large-scale disturbance in Manchester city centre may have been trying to act as a peacemaker. 

Greater Manchester Police were called to a ‘serious disturbance’ in Dantzic Street, near the popular Printworks leisure venue, at around 8pm on Saturday evening.

A group of people were involved and a 60-year-old man suffered injuries and died at the scene.

One man was arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene and taken to custody where he remains.

One city-centre worker, who didn’t wish to be named, said that the victim had tried to act as a ‘peacemaker’ and ‘calm’ the fight down.

‘There was a group of lads who were fighting and the man tried to calm it down,’ he said

‘But one of lads punched him and he fell unconscious to the ground.  

A large police cordon remains in place at this time and officers are at the scene pursuing lines of enquiry and further information.

Superintendent Dave Kehoe, from GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: ‘This was a tragic incident where a 60-year-old has lost his life and our thoughts are with his family and friends who are understandably devastated.

‘A cordon is in place and officers are currently at the scene whilst we piece together exactly what happened and who was involved. 

‘The area was very busy at the time and a number of people may have seen what happened. Even the smallest information could assist with our investigation.’

‘Just after 8pm, officers were called to a report of a disturbance involving a number of people on Dantzic Street near Printworks.

‘A group of people were involved in a disturbance outside and a 60-year-old man suffered an injury and sadly died at the scene.

‘Officers are currently at the scene establishing the timeline of events and following up a number of lines of enquiry.

‘A male was arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene and taken to custody where he remains.’
