The latest Netflix action comedy hit Red Notice has now become the most watched film on the platform after racking up 328.8 million viewing hours, despite poor reviews.
Netflix announced the blockbuster movie’s success Tuesday, saying that over half its 214 million subscribers across the world had tuned in.
Red Notice starring A-list Hollywood celebrities such as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot premiered on Netflix on November 5. It was also released in theaters for people who wish to enjoy it on the big screen, but so far has only made around $2 million of its $200 million production cost back.
Netflix won’t mind though, with the huge outlay on the movie primarily intended to drive subscribers to the streamer and boost its finances long-term.
The film, which has seen by half of the platform’s subscribers, has surpassed the most-watched title that was originally held by the 2018 post-apocalyptic drama Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock.

Despite the success, Rotten Tomatoes has scored the film at 35 percent based on 155 reviews from critics.
Among the poor reviews are a two-star write-up in The Guardian, which branded the movie an overly-complicated attempt to recreate the success of the Indiana Jones movies.
However, 92 percent of viewers beg to differ as they gave it a fresh rating on the site.

The film Red Notice features Johnson as an FBI agent who teams up with an art thief, played by Reynolds, to catch a high-profile criminal played by Gadot.
It had racked up a total of 328.8 viewing hours in 18 days as compared to Bird Box which had 282 million hours in four weeks.
The film has been in the top 10 Netflix category since its premiere in 94 countries, according to the streaming platform.

‘At Cinemark, we love when we have the opportunity to create a cultural moment and comprehensive entertainment experience around a film,’ said Wanda Gierhart Fearing, the company’s chief marketing and content officer.
‘We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm and generosity from Netflix and Dwayne Johnson to make the in-theatre experience exciting and engaging for moviegoers with surprises, giveaways and a Veteran’s Day discounted ticket offer.
‘In the past year, Cinemark has shown more than 10 Netflix films in our immersive environment, and we look forward to testing financially viable models for both parties that have an exclusive theatrical window to eventize key films.’
Johnson also excitedly shared the news of the film becoming the platform’s most-watched on his Instagram page.
‘Here’s my slick talkin’ frenemy (Ryan Reynolds) and I, giving you a taste of why RED NOTICE has officially become THE BIGGEST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF NETFLIX,’ he said in the caption.
‘In under two weeks, we’ve shattered all records and we have many weeks to go. THANK YOU GUYS and enjoy RED NOTICE this weekend around the world.’

The idea of a sequel has also been tossed around by the director Rawson Marshall Thurber due to the film’s success.
‘I think that is a real possibility. If we were to make a sequel, the only responsible thing would be to make two and three back-to-back,’ Thurber told Hollywood Reporter.
‘It’s such a big production, and if you can mount it one time, it will be better for everyone. Including for my mental health.’
