Norwegian authorities euthanase celebrity walrus Freya for drawing too many crowds

A celebrity walrus known affectionately as Freya has been put down by Norwegian authorities due to safety concerns. 

The 600-kilogram female walrus had become a popular attraction in Oslo Fsjord in recent weeks despite warnings from authorities to steer clear of the marine mammal. 

In a statement, Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries said Freya was euthanised on Sunday morning due to “the continued threat to human safety”. 

“Through on-site observations the past week it was made clear that the public has disregarded the current recommendation to keep a clear distance to the walrus,” it…
