Simon Birmingham calls on China to ‘apply as much influence’ as possible on Vladimir Putin amid nuclear threats

Shadow foreign minister Simon Birmingham has called on China to pile on the pressure on Vladimir Putin amid Russia’s attempts to escalate the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian-held referenda in four eastern Ukrainian regions have returned alarmingly high pro-annexation results in recent days.

Putin announced the surveys last week when he also issued a chilling warning to NATO and Ukraine’s western allies not to threaten the “territorial integrity of our country” as he pointed to his large stockpile of nuclear weapons.
