Eleven subsistence mine employees are trapped in an underground shaft after a floor collapse at Zimbabwe’s Redwing Mine, 270 km (167.77 miles) west of the capital Harare, authorities stated on Friday.

The incident befell on Thursday morning, with preliminary assessments pointing to earth tremors because the doable explanation for the accident, Zimbabwe’s mines ministry stated in a press release.

Metallon Company, which owns Redwing Mine, confirmed the incident in a separate assertion. The corporate has deployed a rescue group to deliver the trapped miners again to the floor, it added.

“The group has made a number of rescue makes an attempt. Nonetheless, the bottom stays unstable, rendering rescue operations unsafe. Our groups are diligently assessing floor situations to ensure the rescue operations proceed safely as quickly as doable,” Metallon stated.

Mining operations at Redwing have been undertaken by subsistence miners finishing up unsanctioned work because the mine was positioned underneath company rescue in 2020, the corporate stated.
