Germany’s Georg Steinhauser halted race chief Tadej Pogacar’s streak of stage wins on the Giro d’Italia with a solo victory after a day of incessant climbing.
Steinhauser (EF Schooling-EasyPost) went alone on the primary climb of the Brocon Move with simply over 30km of the 159km seventeenth stage remaining, and he continued to open up a sizeable hole over Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier. With the peloton displaying no actual urgency in giving chase, the 22-year-old Grand Tour debutant Steinhauser powered up the second climb of Brocon Move in regular rain to take the victory.
