- Jeremy Finlayson has been ruled out for the season
- Port Adelaide star suffered a lacerated spleen on Sunday
- It comes after his wife opened up on her cancer battle
Jeremy Finlayson will miss the remainder of the 2024 AFL season after suffering a horrific injury last weekend.
The Port Adelaide star copped a knock during the Power’s defeat by the Gold Coast on Sunday. However, he continued to play out the match despite feeling pain in his sternum.
Scans on Monday showed a small laceration to his spleen.
Fortunately, the 28-year-old forward does not need surgery for the issue, but the club says he will ‘need an extensive period to rest and heal.’
‘He had a small, but stable laceration on his spleen,’ Tyson Goldsack, Port’s assistant coach, said.
‘He didn’t really report anything in the game, he felt soreness but just generally.
‘But he continued playing, it wasn’t until after the game he reported it was pretty sore and the doctors sent him in for a scan and they found that.’
Finlayson is out of contract at the end of the season and Goldsack insisted the club will continue to support him.

His bad news comes after wife Kellie opened up on her battle with cancer
‘We will just make sure he recovers the way he needs to recover,’ he said.
‘His health is the No. 1 priority.’
Finlayson’s bad news comes after his brave wife Kellie opened up on her cancer battle.
Kellie, 28, has battled bowel and lung cancer after it emerged in November 2021 following the birth of their child, Sophia.
Surgeries, chemotherapy and other treatments followed the news that her initial stage 3 diagnosis had been changed to stage 4.
Taking to Instagram earlier this month, the social media influencer continued to document her complex journey – which has been a source of inspiration to so many.
‘Two years ago today I woke up in ICU after hours on the operation table,’ she posted.
‘Today I’ve already held a Workplace Program, had a massage and now I’m currently sitting in the physio waiting room for a completely unrelated issue… [so] wild.
‘I’m also recovering from a cold [go little immune system] and just hit the Scanxiety for this months check in.’
