A holidaymaker is facing a $15,000 medical bill after snapping her leg in three places and suffering graphic head injuries when she crashed a moped into a bus.
Victorian tourist Bridget Harvey was going for a ride on Magnetic Island, near Townsville in north Queensland, last month when she lost control on a windy uphill road.
‘I lost control around a turn and had a head-on a collision with an oncoming bus,’ she said in a GoFundMe appeal.
‘I was knocked unconscious and busted up pretty badly.’
The collision on June 7 snapped and twisted her left leg in three places, requiring a pole and large screws at a hospital 2,500km away from home.
The 33-year-old woman suffered concussion head trauma which also broke her elbow and fractured her eye socket, nasal cavity and the base of her skull.
‘I was lucky that two of the hospital’s doctors were on the bus I’d crashed into and were able to assist immediately,’ she said.
Her injuries were so severe she had to be airlifted to Townsville University Hospital during her holiday with boyfriend Anthony Main.

Ms Harvey, who lives in Ballarat north-west of Melbourne, isn’t covered by the Transport Accident Commission because it only provides financial support if an accident occurred in her home state of Victoria.
‘There is going to be a lot of out of pockets and loss of income,’ she said.
As a counsellor and art therapist on a contract at a perinatal and parenting centre, she also has no paid leave, making life particularly tough as she endures months of rehabilitation to cope with broken bones and a brain injury.
‘I expect to eat a fair bit into my savings to navigate this and I’ve been lucky enough to have had good work lately to help me survive a setback like this,’ she said.
Her GoFundMe campaign has so far raised $4,170 since it was launched on June 13, with Ms Harvey hoping to raise $7,000 to take the pressure off her family and boyfriend.

The money will go towards rehabilitation, crutches, accommodation, transport back to Victoria and medical bills.
‘Thank you so much again for all of the love and support, it is helping me kick ass at my physio and therapies and stay positive about recovering, and I appreciate you all so very much,’ she said.
