Matthew Lawrence will not think Mrs. Doubtfire reboot is achievable without late co-star Robin Williams: ‘I would not want to do it with no him’

Matthew Lawrence would not believe that the Mrs. Doubtfire film can be rebooted without his co-star, the late Robin Williams. 

Williams, who died at age 63 by suicide in 2014, famously portrayed a newly-divorced father who disguises himself as a nanny in an attempt to shell out much more time with his youngsters in the legendary film. 

The Brotherly Appreciate star informed TMZ he didn’t imagine a reboot of the unique 1993 was ‘possible’ devoid of Williams.  

‘Without Robin I will not assume that movie is attainable,’ Lawrence, 44, advised TMZ just before recalling past attempts to revive the story prior to Williams’ loss of life. 

‘I signify they have been. In 2014 they were speaking about it and all people was kind of buzzing about it. And then definitely, you know, he passed away. I wouldn’t want to do it without the need of him personally.’

It comes considerably less than a 12 months right after Mrs. Doubtfire director Chris Columbus exposed he met with Williams to examine a probable sequel to the movie prior to his death in 2014.

Williams committed suicide in August 2014 by hanging himself with a belt following struggling with bipolar disorder and addiction for a long time. He was 63.

Speaking to Company Insider in November 2023, Columbus recalled his last assembly with the late actor and how they seemed around a ‘really strong’ script collectively.

‘He and I failed to communicate about a sequel until the calendar year he handed away,’ Columbus advised the outlet.

‘We experienced a script that was published and it was the very last time I saw Robin. I went to his dwelling and we sat down and talked about it and the script was really sturdy.’

Launched theatrically in 1993, Mrs. Doubtfire follows newly-divorced Daniel Hillard (Williams) who, in the hopes of investing far more time with his little ones, disguises himself as a Scottish nanny and convinces his ex-spouse Miranda (Sally Subject) to employ him.

Williams had to shell out somewhere around 4 hours in hair and makeup to rework into the titular character.

So after seeking over the sequel script, Williams requested if he ‘had to be in the suit as a lot this time.’ 

He mentioned that the transformation was incredibly ‘physically demanding’ for him and in contrast it to ‘running a marathon’ each and every working day.

‘So we talked about it and I imagine he was hoping in the rewrite we would minimize again on the Doubtfire character,’ Columbus stated.

‘But then Robin passed absent so there will hardly ever be a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire.’

But he believes a documentary about the film is feasible: 'You know I never thought about that, but documentaries are pretty cool, you know. So I don't know, maybe. Yeah we could do that!'

Columbus also disclosed why it took 21 years for Williams to eventually appear all-around to the idea of a sequel.

‘Back then, there was an mindset that sequels were appeared down on by the artists. So Robin was versus executing a sequel quickly after,’ he spelled out.

Now Columbus isn’t guaranteed about the long term of Mrs. Doubtfire.

He thinks that ‘Fox/Disney owns the rights’ to the character so they ‘can do whichever they want’ — whether it be a sequel or a Television set series.

But Columbus is staunchly in opposition to it.

‘Should they? God no. I will surely be incredibly vocal about it if they decide to do it.’
