Sofia Vergara says her breasts are too big for her to play a scientist or astronaut on TV as she admits: ‘I never went to an acting class in my life’

Sofia Vergara quipped that her breasts are too big for her to play a scientist – as she admitted: ‘I never went to an acting class in my life.’

The 51-year-old became beloved around the world for her turn as Gloria Pritchett on the sitcom Modern Family, which earned her four Emmy nominations.

However she made light of her abilities in a new interview, insisting she was ‘almost playing myself’ on the sitcom and does not in fact ‘know anything about acting.’ 

She added that her Colombian accent ‘is beautiful, but it’s like, I cannot be a scientist, I cannot be an astronaut.’

Lifting up her famously large bosoms mid-interview, she said: ‘I don’t want to be a scientist with these,’ during this year’s Hollywood Reporter Drama Actress Roundtable. 

She earned a laugh from the table, which included Jennifer Aniston, Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Brie Larson and Anna Sawai.

‘I feel very awkward here because this is my favorite group of actresses, and I realize I don’t know anything about acting,’ Sofia confessed.

Jennifer, who herself became a global superstar because of her decade-long run on the sitcom Friends, objected: ‘What? No!’

‘Not in a bad way, it’s just a reality,’ Sofia reasoned. ‘I did 11 years on Modern Family, but it was almost playing myself in a way. I never went to an acting class in my life.’

She added: ‘And when I decide to do something different, it’s hard because this accent is beautiful, but it’s like, I cannot be a scientist, I cannot be an astronaut.’

Sofia was showered with acclaim this year for Griselda, a Netflix drama series starring her as the fearsome Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.

She explained that ‘when I decided to do Griselda, I wasn’t thinking, “Oh, I want [to distance myself from] Gloria. No, it was I know that character.’

Sofia shared: ‘I lived in Colombia in that era. My brother was a drug dealer and got killed. But I’ve never seen it as a woman – I knew it as many, many men.’

She previously revealed that her elder brother Rafael was murdered in 1998 during a kidnapping attempt that escalated.

‘We come from a successful family, and he knew he was a target for kidnapping,’ explained Sofia, whose father was a cattle farmer.

‘He always had bodyguards. Then one day he went out alone and was shot dead. I was devastated,’ she added, according to the New York Post.

During her run on Modern Family, Sofia told George Lopez that she was urged to get a breast reduction early in her acting career in order to be taken seriously.

‘But I never wanted to be taken serious. I wanted to do comedy, yeah! So I said, you know what? If you want me – I mean, they were gonna want me,’ she joked. ‘But if they’re gonna give me jobs like this, I’m gonna stay like this.’

Her mother Margarita was of a similar mindset, but to a more extreme degree, warning Sofia: ‘God is gonna punish you if you take your t**s off!’ 

Sofia has never shied away from poking fun at her cleavage, including during the opening segment of the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2013.

After other stars gave ponderous speeches that ended with: ‘I am an actor,’ Sofia began: ‘I grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia in a very traditional Catholic home. My father told me that if I ever did anything artistic, I was going to look like a hooker.’

She went on: ‘I told him: “With these huge boobs that I inherited from your mom, I already look like a hooker.” I am Sofia Vergara, and I am an actor.’

Early this year she acknowledged that her figure had helped her break into showbiz, saying: ‘It would be absurd to deny it or for that to make me feel bad.’

She proudly told the Madrid newspaper El Pais: ‘My giant boobs and my body opened doors for me; they were my passport to the world when I was 20 years old when I started as a model, but today I’m 51 years old and I’m still here.’
