Heeramandi Actor, Jason Shah Criticises Sharmin Segal’s Role As Alamzeb, Netizens Praise His Honesty

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix drama, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, released on May 1, 2024, has been a topic of discussion. The drama, known for its larger-than-life sets, aesthetic, and stellar cast, has also sparked controversy. While the majority of the cast received praise for their roles, it was the filmmaker’s niece, Sharmin Segal, who faced intense criticism for her portrayal of ‘Alamzeb’.

Jason Shah feels Sharmin Segal could have escalated her emotions

Now, her co-star, Jason Shah, who plays ‘Alastair Cartwright’ in the series, has spoken about Sharmin’s performance. During an interview with Entertainment Live, Jason expressed his views regarding SLB’s niece’s acting and said that she could have escalated her emotions at different places. Revealing that the filmmaker had asked Sharmin to act from the heart instead of the head, Jason added:

“I thought, personally, there should have been a higher escalation of emotion in different places. I remember Sanjay also saying, ‘Stop acting from your head, act from your heart’. But I don’t know, maybe that’s what they wanted from her. Maybe that was the one tone that they were looking for from this character. But that’s the director’s call. She was alright. She was doing her thing. We worked pretty easily together. We never had any difficulty as such.”

Jason Shah thinks Sharmin Segal’s performance was ‘one tone’

Further, Jason discussed that maybe Sharmin was told to keep her tone the same throughout the eight-episode series. However, he personally felt that the character had a lot of scope and space to do many different things. In his words:

“Maybe, that’s what I think. If not, if she wasn’t told to keep it one-tone, I felt that the character had a lot of space and a lot of scope to do a lot of different things.”

Netizens praise Jason Shah for speaking the truth

This excerpt from the whole interview has gone viral on social media, where netizens are praising Jason for speaking the truth and being honest regarding Sharmin’s performance. One user said, “Finally at least someone’s honest.” Another one wrote, “Oh no he doesn’t know how Bollywood works. U cannot be this honest.” A third netizen commented, “How politely he said that he agrees that acting done by Sharmin is horrible.”

Heeramandi’s stars defend Sharmin Segal’s performance

Previously, Shekhar Suman defended Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece and hailed her performance in Heeramandi saying, “What has happened is that the world has been too harsh on the poor little thing. She’s a young girl, and the criticism can destroy her.” Sharmin’s on-screen love interest, ‘Tajdar Baloch’ a.k.a. Taha Shah also defended her in an interview on Zoom, “I have worked with her, and I do know as an actor she has tried her best.” 

Aditi Ray Hydari, too, voiced her opinion in an interview and said, “It’s horrible to pick on anybody. I know some people like something and some people don’t. There is a way to say it. It can get very mean.” Indresh Malik, who portrays ‘Ustaad ji’, revealed in an interview that he had fun working with Sharmin and said that she’d go places.
